Want to Drive

Have you ever thought about driving either doing deliveries, driving cab or becoming a ride share driver.to make some extra cash or maybe making a living at it? Well I'll give you some good tips here and some pros and cons to help you decide if driving for cash is an option for you.

I know many people think driving is an easy job. For the most part it is. However it does have its moments of stress filled drama. It might be traffic, it might be a bad customer or you get a flat tire. Just like any job there are days when you just want to quit. So don't think everything is going to be peaches and cream.

Lets go over the pros and cons.

Pro. You can drive your own car. Con. That is more wear and tear on your car and you pay for your gas.

It is nice driving your own car. You are comfortable in it. You know how it drives. Everything is tailored to you. That is nice, it makes the day that much better. I personally drive my own car on deliveries, I feel at home this way. That being said. I would be a liar if I told you I don't stress out over wear and tear on my car. Because I do. But I still prefer my car. When doing food deliveries, most the time you will be using your car, very few places will provide you a ride. But ride share apps make it easy to rent a car so you don't have to use your car. Heck you don't even need a car to be a ride share driver.

Pro. Work when you want.  Con. Is it busy when you want to work.

For me working when I want is not an option. I run deliveries after my day job. However it is at that time the deliveries start coming in. That's great for me. I do the deliveries at the busiest time of day for Crown Fried Chicken. Lot's of places like Lyft And other ride share platforms (I'll leave links for Lyft below) advertise that you can work when you want. That is true, but are you making good money at them times. The fact is no matter what type of driving you want to do to make cash. You need to work at the busiest time of day to really make money. And that may not be the time you want to drive. I'd suggest this. If you like driving in the morning Amazon Flex is great, Noon till night Deliver food. Night time do Ride shares like Lyft. After midnight I don't think anyone should drive then. But if you insist cab is the way to go. After midnight the smaller cab places in small cities will thin out the drivers then. Ride share platforms won't do that.

Pro. Tips WooHoo. Con. None.

Here is the golden rule on tips. Tips are NEVER expected, but gladly accepted. I was a cabbie for a few years. And I've done food deliveries a few years too. If you expect a tip from every customer. You are going to be upset 1/2 the time. I never bank on tips. I treat them like a bonus. I've seen other drivers get really upset because they were not getting tipped as often as they liked. Well if you get upset when you don't get tipped it puts you in a bad mood and your next ride/delivery will be effected by this. You need to stay in a good mood. You are more likely to get a tip if you have a smile on your face when the customer opens the door. So never expect a tip and you will always be happy.

Speaking of tips. Let me give you some

1. Safety First. There is always a chance to be robed. This is the worst part about driving. I never been robed and hope I never will. I can't do anything to stop this, but this info could prevent you from getting robbed or save your life. Its a good idea to invest in a dash cam. Don't want to loose it Tile it. Hide a tile chip in your car. If your car gets stolen you can tell the police where it is. Have pepper spay and a flashlight handy. And whenever you are parked waiting for the customer have your hazard lights on(big tip if you drive at night). When waiting on a customer always leave the doors locked, windows up, car in drive and have a clear exit path. It only takes a second for someone to sneak up on you. So you want a clear speedy exit if needed.  If you run food deliveries or packages always park in a well lit area and lock your doors. Never leave your car running or unlocked. And only carry $20 dollars with you to make change. Drop off your money someplace safe in between rides or deliveries. When driving leave your wallet or purse at home only carry what you need.

2. Keep yourself and your car Clean. This also goes a long ways. If your driving cab or ride shares A clean you and clean car are a must. You want all your customers to have a pleasant ride. And if anything is dirty that will effect how happy the customer is. Keep you language Clean too, and talk with respect at all time. Sometimes this is easier said then done but you need to make it habit.

3. Multitask. There are millions of types of referral programs out there where you get paid for each person you refer. It could be for high end clothing or for online sites or to a ride share app. Pretty much a referral program for everything. Find a referral program about something you love and or know a lot about. I joined the SolarCity ambassador program because I love renewable energy. Doing deliveries I meet lots of people. If solar energy comes up. I take that as a chance to refer someone. And since I'm giving advice on driving I joined the Lyft ambassador program to refer people. Like tips, I don't expect anyone to join. But if they do its a pleasant bonus for me.

4. Earn online in your down time. There are many easy ways to earn money online. I like Get Paid To sites. I watch videos, do web searches, take surveys and other simple fast stuff in between deliveries to make a couple extra bucks. But that's not the only way to earn online. You can be a freelance writer or photographer.  Write reviews for songs movies or restaurants. Become a secret shopper. There are many ways to earn in your down time. Find 1 and you will thank me later.

5. This is a big 1. Obey the street laws. Most drivers think they have to get from point A to point be as fast as they can. Thinking that the will get a few more rides in because they speed. Not true!! You are going to have downtime just about everyday. When you speed you only gain more downtime, at the rick of a ticket. Here's what else happens when you speed with a passenger in the car. They want to get where they are going safely. They don't want to worry if they are going to make it there alive. I've been a passenger in a cab, where the driver speeds. It wasn't pleasant for me. If your passengers are worried or scared, they are not tipping you!! Not only that, but if you get a ticket there goes the days pay and then some.

I'll keep this page updated. If you're a driver and see I left out some key info please share it. Thanks for reading.
